Churchy Pt.3

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

"Great is Thy faithfulness!" "Great is Thy faithfulness!"
  Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
    "Great is Thy faithfulness," Lord, unto me!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As we walked out of the house this morning to head to church, I felt a breeze brush my hair back off my shoulders.  Is that a nip in the air, I sense?  A fresh scent of leaves harkening of fall's approach?!
Corny thoughts aside, I pushed back any feelings of today turning out well.  We were headed to try another bible study and I feared getting my hopes up again.  We dropped Georgia off at the nursery and headed down the long walkway to the door of the class.  It was closed...we were a little late.  James and I hesitated.  I said that I would open the door and he should go in first.  He said 'are you sure I shouldn't get the door and you go in?'  It was just a few moments, but I felt that if we waited any longer, I would turn around and walk away.  How silly are we?!  So, I jerked the door open and we stepped inside...
Let me just say that I like to pride myself on being able to size up situations within minutes.  Well, after about 1 minute in that room, I spent the next 5 minutes thinking, "Thank you, Lord!  Thank you, Lord!"  It was the best group of people I've had the pleasure of meeting in quite some time and a sight for sore eyes!  They were exactly what we were looking for and more!
I feel ridiculous talking about 10 strangers like this, but you have to understand how much we've been longing for community (if I haven't made that abundantly clear in my previous posts!)  We were met with warm smiles, hearty hellos, and a sense of joy, peace, and love washed over me.  The lesson was wonderful, thought-provoking, and encouraging.  The class is going through a Christian parenting book together.  The girls meet together once monthly, the class has a social coming up in September, and they all have 1 child under the age of 3.  One girl is even from Houston!  At the end, everyone stayed to talk and get to know us better . Before we left, two women said they would call me this week.
Does it get any better, my friends?  Why does God continue to be faithful to this unworthy servant?!
As I quoted above, the best summation of today's events are thus:
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Who is like You, oh Lord?!  How great Thou art!
Uh oh.
This is how I found Georgia Kate after I put her down for an afternoon nap today! Time to lower the crib!
Precious Moment!
First time to say 'dada'!
I trust You.
Back in May of 2010, I was dealing with some tough spiritual issues.  I had a lot of doubts and questions.  I felt like maybe God couldn't hear me... or maybe He just stopped listening.  I was blinded by foolishness, selfishness, and pride.  {I won't go into everything here, but if you ever wanted me to expand on that, I am open about it.}
Three days before I found out I was pregnant, I was alone at home.  James was working night shifts and I was feeling lonely and scared in our tiny apartment next to the medical center in downtown Houston.  I was trying to fall asleep in the guest bed (where I slept when James was not home...not sure why I felt less alone there) and yet I kept wishing morning wouldn't come.  Work was tough for me at the time.  I cried out to God, again, finally humbling myself to realize maybe He wasn't the problem.
Maybe it was me who wasn't listening.
I have no idea how I stumbled upon this song in those moments of desperation.  Maybe I just googled something about trusting God.  I really wanted to trust Him again.  I was finished paying lip service.  I wanted it to be authentic.  Without reservation.
I may have grown up a little white, baptist church mouse, but I believe those who truly know me won't be surprised that I love this song.  Deep down inside, behind all the decorum lies a heart that loves to worship our King with uninhibited passion {in private}.
This song reached into my soul that night and was exactly what I needed.  I listened to it about 10 times, tears streaming down my cheeks.  With each click of the 'replay' button, my confidence grew.
My new mantra became silently repeating to myself.  I will trust You.  I will trust You.  I will trust You.
And, just three days later when I had locked myself in a Whataburger bathroom on my lunch hour and read PREGNANT on a little test strip, you better believe I needed it!
"Even though I can't see
and I can't feel your touch
I will trust you Lord
how I love you so much
though my nights my seem long
and I feel so alone
Lord my trust is in you
I surrender to you"
"But I trust You
Lord it's not easy
sometimes the pain in my life
makes You seem far away
but I'll trustYou
I need to know You're here
through the tears and the pain
through the heartache and rain"
Starting at 3:11 it starts getting really good.  Make sure you catch that part.
Something tonight made me remember this song.  Maybe it's because James is away, again, working a night shift and I needed a reminder to TRUST Him.  I feel like this is a time in my life where I'm being refined by fire.  And, sometimes it 'burns so good' and, sometimes...it just burns.
But, as the song states, God.will.make.a.way.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
   test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
   and lead me in the way everlasting. - Psalm 139
You just gotta laugh...
So, I'm still getting used to walking about in public with my sweet little one in tow!  I feel like she's this amazing accessory that everyone wants to see and oooo and ahhh over.  Don't get me wrong, I totally  understand-- I mean, I think now that I have a baby I do that more to other people than I did before-- even when she's not with me!  Babies are just so darn cute!  :)
I think she brings joy to people and that is a beautiful thing!  But, anyway, I have had this particular incident happen a couple times already and it happened again yesterday.  I was sitting in the doctor's office and had gotten GK out of her car seat (which was in her snap and go stroller) and was letting her cool off.  She gets super duper hot in that car seat-- do other mothers deal with that?!  It worries me at times.  Anyway, so there are these two older ladies (old as in late 70s) and they just started gasping and saying how much they love babies and she's just precious and all that.  Then, one of them says, "Wow.  She's a beautiful baby!", glances up at me, and then with her very next breath "She must look like her Daddy."
hahahahahahaha.
I totally know she wasn't meaning it as an insult!  The girl has light brown hair and blue eyes for pete's sake, but the juxtaposition of those two statements is funny to me.  It's not the first time that exact sequence has occurred, so I thought I'd share...
Think of it as your Tuesday Funny.  :)
6 months and counting...
6 month stats:
Weight: 16lbs 1oz (50%)
Height: 27 in (90%)
Head Circumference: 17in (75%)
Baby girl, you are so loved and you love us right back so well!  You are special and unique...just like every other baby! :)  But, you are OUR baby and we are so proud of you and can't imagine our lives without you.  You bring us joy and love and laughter and slobber and kisses everyday!  Watching you learn and grow and discover this big, beautiful world gives me a new and fresh perspective.
The gospel of Luke (18:16-17) quotes Jesus as saying, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
I won't pretend that I completely understand how to approach our God like a child at times, but seeing the world through your eyes helps me catch a better glimpse of the trust, faith, and love a child brings.  I pray your daddy and I will always be examples of how to draw closer to our Lord and never a hindrance for you.
Here is what you've been up to this month:
~We were nursing but are now bottle feeding.  You looooove your bottle!  Seriously!  It makes you so happy to see it coming and so very sad to see it go.  You still eat 4 times a day and, occasionally, once at night.  You also eat cereal each morning (about 3 T), some fruit/vegetables at lunch and/or dinner (a couple T each).  You have successfully eaten rice cereal, banana, sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, and applesauce mainly in the last couple weeks.  You've licked on a grape, peach, and popsicle.  Marmee let you have a very small bit of a popsicle (you kept reaching for it and putting your hand on her arm, so she just couldn't refuse you) but she regretted it after you threw a fit when the popsicle was all gone.  You can have a bit of a temper...
~You are up more between each nap.  You used to only stay awake for 1hr-1.5hrs, but now you are up for 2 or more before needing a nap.  You still take about 3 a day, though.  You sleep most of the night, but do still get up for a feed about 70% of the time.  Apparently, you aren't always sleeping as long as I would like to think!  Marmee caught you many times just happily playing in your crib when we thought you were still napping or sleeping for the night.  One time, she left you in there to see how long you would play and after about an hour she went ahead and got you out!  Now, I check on you a bit more often just to make sure you are resting.
~Your personality is coming out more and more and I LOVE it!  You are silly, sweet, and enthusiastic.  But...as I stated above, you can have a bit of a temper and are very impatient at times.  It's funny for me to see parts of myself in such a little person.  As I strive to work on my temper and lack of patience, I hope to help correct yours as well.  When you are happy or excited about something (such as taking a bottle), you have what we affectionately call the 'happy leg'!  You are sitting up or laying on your back and you pull your right leg up to your chest a bit and swing it happily from the knee up and down.  It's super cute.:)
~You have a huge fascination with hair and love playing with mommy's and putting it in your mouth.  It makes you giggle!  You also love when people put their face up close to yours.  You almost just start purring like a cat.  (Mommy doesn't like comparing you to cats, b/c she doesn't like them, but it's the best description.)  I guess the girl isn't that into personal space, so I'm interested to see how that develops. :)  She still puts EVERYTHING in her mouth and loves to chew on things-- she doesn't suck on her paci-- just chews on it!  It's like she's a black lab puppy putting her mouth on the couch, on the wooden legs of the coffee table, and around the poles of her playmat!  Luckily, she has no teeth or we'd be in big trouble!  (I love labs! :))
~The BIG DEVELOPMENT of the month has been CRAWLING!  She seemed to be a little late to the 'rolling over party' of her peers, but once she did, she developed other skills rapidly.  She lifted herself up quickly, then started getting on all fours, then began to rock to and fro, and finally started making motions to move forward!  All in a matter of weeks.  It's been so fun to watch!  For a while, she was 'crawling' more like a caterpillar by getting on all fours taking a step or two and then falling on her tummy and scooting a bit.  Then, this past Friday with my mom and dad in town watching, she legitimately crawled about 4-5 steps.  She also started sitting up on her own, though she still needs supervision to not fall backwards.  She will crawl and then turn and put her bottom down as if to sit up, but it still needs some perfecting.  We are having to baby-proof the house and it's kinda a pain!  haha.  But, she's definitely worth it!
~2 things that could be defined as 'areas needing improvement' maybe are lack of teeth and lack of consistent 'talking' or babbling.  We haven't been teething yet, which isn't a huge cause for concern.  I guess it will come in time.  The lack of talking is a bit worrisome, but I know that too will develop.  It's funny because it seemed like she was trying to 'talk' and wanting to babble at a really early age, but now she goes for stretches of time without much attempt.  She does sometimes get into a kick where she babbles for a while.  A lot of it are noises and coos and such, along with blowing little bubbles and spitting.  Again, I'm not super concerned, but it's something to monitor these next few months.  Maybe she'll just be more of the strong, silent type like her father.  :)
~GK, you still love all music and sounds, different textures and colors of fabric, a good ceiling fan, and chewing on your fingers and others',  You 'newly' love looking at yourself in the mirror, your bottle, knocking things over, and playing in your play pen.
This month, Marmee, Aunt Katie, and Granddaddy were all able to love on you!  You are sweet and not stingy with your smiles, but you still reserve your best giggles and laughter for your Daddy.  He is the best at making you giddy!  We look forward to seeing Gram and Papa Doc in the next couple weeks.
We love you and hope you always know we are doing our best!
Here are some pics from our "photoshoot".
Churchy Pt.2
So, friends, we were a little disappointed with our Sunday morning experience with the bible study.  I'm so sad to report that.  The class was not extremely welcoming, some were friendly, but just not to the degree I was expecting.  Also, the bible study itself was very laid back and lacking in some depth.  I really dislike criticizing the church, so I'll stop there.  We are going to try another class next week and hope we get a better feeling.
If not, we have discussed possibly finding a new church in the area that maybe has a more traditional set up or larger groups on Sunday mornings.  We still love this church and know it is accomplishing many wonderful things in the community and across the world.  But, it still may not be where we need to get plugged in.
Time will tell!  Thanks for the prayers!
Churchy
Tomorrow is the highly-anticipated first Sunday to attend a Sunday morning Bible Study (heaven forbid we use the words 'Sunday School', but that's a soap box for another day!!!)
Anyway, time to tone down the desperation, put on our spiffiest garb, and smile purty! :)
I'll let you know how it goes...of course!
Prayers welcome!
6 month post coming soon!
When It Rains, It Pours
This was the thought that just passed through my mind as I closed the blinds and curtains to GK's room and laid her down for her afternoon nap.  I felt it would be a fitting title to this post as I sit here with the fierce lightning, crashing thunder, crazy winds, and pouring rain in our little Birmingham abode.  It's car-alarm-run-amok type thunder!  The most powerful storm we've had in weeks!
Anyway, I found it fitting because this morning my parents left, James is working until 7, and the heavens are crying with me!  I can't say the weather is too far from my current mood...
As my last post stated, my mother was here for two weeks to help after my surgery.  She wouldn't allow me to lift Georgia AT ALL, so her days (and nights) were spent picking up little G out of her crib, putting her down in her crib, putting together her bottles, feeding her, burping her, cleaning off her own clothes when the inevitable spit up came, setting her on the floor to play, playing with her, picking her back up, changing her diapers, giving her baths, getting her ready for bed.  Over and over and over.  All the while, tending to me, making dinners each night for James and myself, doing laundry, and keeping the house clean.  Now I know what it's like to have live-in help...and I'd be lying if I said I was sitting here and not missing it!  My mother was super woman.  Sometimes I feel it can become trite to say, but I can’t help but just think how blessed, blessed, blessed I am.  It was a humbling experience.
‘When it rains it pours’ would also be an apt description of my emotions these two weeks!  The fog of pain meds, combined with pain, combined with not being able to care for my child for days, combined with having to stop nursing… it’s been tough.
Yes, I just said I had to stop nursing.
Tears spring to my eyes as I type this.  Just a little backstory… this past month GK has been having trouble nursing.  She pulled away quickly, didn’t feed for long, and often cried.  This was very abnormal.  It was also the same time we were getting her used to bottles, so my mom could feed her stored milk while I was in the hospital.  We finally got her to take a bottle and she began to love it.  I know there is a difference between correlation and causation in statistics, but at the very least there is a connection between her newfound love of the bottle and her trouble nursing in my mind.  I’ve always had trouble pumping and have never been able to pump more than 3 oz at a time.  I spent the last month pumping enough to store milk for TWO days worth of feeds during my hospitalization.  It was frustrating!
Anyway, so even before the surgery we were having some problems, but I was doing all I knew and could do to get things right.  She had noticeably lost weight and even Mom and Katie noticed when they arrived.  I was getting to be very concerned.  I talked to a lactation consultant in Houston and one at the hospital here to prepare for the surgery and know when to ‘pump and dump’ and when I could start using the milk.  I arranged to rent a hospital-grade pump while in the hospital hoping it would help.  Loooong story short, after the stored milk ran out, the milk I was currently pumping (even though deemed ‘safe’) looked super sketch to me, had no fat to it (probably b/c I wasn’t able to keep much down for a few days), she was still struggling to feed, and with everything going on, I decided it was maybe time to switch to formula.
Looking back, I don’t think I realized in that moment how hard I would take that decision.  The next few days were so very painful emotionally as I suddenly (and without much mental preparation) stopped doing my favorite thing of motherhood- nursing.  I’m sure it didn’t help that at the same time I was hardly even able to care for GK and that added to the emotional struggle.
Honestly, I didn’t deal with any post-partum depression, but the last couple weeks have been pretty hard and, at times, a bit dark.  Lots of tears.  Lots of questions.  Lots of doubts about myself as a mother.  Did I do enough?  Did I give up too easily?  Will we still have the same bond as before?  Does she even need me now? (That last one is so ridiculous and the product of allowing the devil to whisper in your ear.)
My mother, in her wisdom, saw my troubled spirit and began to make sure I fed GK her bottles every time and put her in places where it would be easier for me to comfortably play with her—like on my bed.  It helped repair what felt like a broken bond.  And I began to heal.
I’ve known many mothers who weren’t able or decided not to nurse past 6 mos (including my own) and they are wonderful mothers and their bonds are super strong with their children.  So, please don’t think I am questioning anyone else on that.  I’m just relaying my experience.  I do encourage my mother-friends to give nursing a try, because, though it may sound strange, it is also the most wonderful experience!  The knowledge that I not only helped create a life and bring it into the world, but that I am also able to sustain that life is very powerful!
Today, I am sad missing the companionship of my mother, but I feel that I am healing very well (post-op appt is Monday) and Georgia and I are having a blast together. :)  I am thankful that as the tears streamed down my cheeks this morning, she was able to giggle and smile and pull my hair…and, thus, snap me out of the loneliness!
I hope you know I write this personal post for myself (it’s cathartic), but also in case it may help another.
Well, what do ya know?!  Now the sun’s shining outside…how fitting. :)
Thanks for caring!
P.S.  Formula is expensive.The end.
Stuff and Things...
Sorry I have been MIA from the blogosphere the past week, but I have a good excuse!  This past weekend my sister and mother came to town.  I am so excited they are here!  Yet, I wish it were under better circumstances.  You see, Monday morning I had surgery to repair an injury I sustained during childbirth (RVF).
Now, before all the young women of child-bearing age go and get all concerned on me, you'll be relieved to know this happens in less than 1% of births in the United States.  Yes, I said ONE PERCENT and almost exclusively in Third World countries.  Awesome.
So, how did I come to get this problem?!?  Simply put, we don't know.  Many of you know my birth story.  It was, to me, as magical as popping out a baby can be and was a really wonderful experience!  I labored mainly at home, arrived at the hospital 8cm dilated, got an epidural, started pushing 4 hours later, and within 40 minutes of focused, but non-traumatic pushing had a beautiful baby nestled in my bosom.  A week later I discovered some issues so rare my OB/GYN couldn't even believe they were happening.  One week more of feeling like I was crazy and googling things one should never have to google (humor helps me cope), I was diagnosed.
Aside from some physical discomfort, the last few months have been more emotionally difficult.  I am blessed to have a very loving, supportive, and patient husband.  Now, I am ready to get this fixed, feel whole again, and move forward.
Here we are a few days after surgery.  My mother very sacrificially took off work to stay with me for 2 weeks as I heal.  Healing is so crucial in this relatively minor surgery to make sure this doesn't turn into a much bigger nightmare.  So, she is here to help lift and look after GK and me.  I've always known I have an extremely selfless and loving mother and this is just a case-in-point.  My sister was also here for a few days to love on GK (and me!).  She just left to head to the airport and I will miss her so!!!!  Katie stayed with me in the hospital pre-op, during surgery, and even spent the night with me.  Her selflessness is so humbling!  She took great care of me and put me at ease.
I'm not going to lie...I've had a lot of anxiety leading up to this time.  But, I am hopeful this surgery means the end, not the beginning.  And if I am unable to fully care for and watch over GK, there is nowhere else I would rather her be than in the loving and capable arms of my mother.
Just an aside, James will, of course, be here as well, but he is on a difficult surgical rotation working nights.  I have great support from my mom and sister, but I know he will pitch in whenever he can.
This weekend was spent shopping, laughing, working out, watching Anne of Green Gables, and playing with GK as much as possible.  Pretty much doing all the things that I won't be able to do fully for several weeks (except laughing...I can do that! :))  The surgery was Monday at noon and I stayed overnight in the hospital.
Thank you to all those who were praying for me the past few days.  The surgery went well and I am feeling better than I thought I would be.  I am resting at home now on pain meds and taking it easy.  Unfortunately, it makes me very ill to look at the computer screen, so this may be the last you hear from me for a while.
I better end now.  Have a wonderful week!
"I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But, take heart!  I have overcome the world." John 16:33
Concert pianist in the making??
Blah blah blah
Georgia's baby talk up to this point has always had a 'g' sound to it as in the word 'go'. But, as of yesterday she's started using a 'b' sound. Take a listen!
